European Pond TurtleThe European Pond Turtles (Emys orbicularis) are permanent residents of Kopački rit.
They usually settle on embankments and in ponds outside the floodplain. The turtles cannot be found deep inside the floodplain because there are no dry areas for them to lay their eggs. The turtle's nest is buried in the sandy part of the embankment which is often dug up by foxes and other beasts.
Turtles often become the White-tailed eagles prey.
Dice SnakeThe Dice Snake (Natrix tesselata) is a usual resident of Kopački rit. It likes to stay in the water and feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fish. The Dice Snake is a completely harmless snake. It won’t even bite when caught.
This type of snake has square patterns on the stomach and back which is why it reminds us of the Common viper. The Dice Snake sometimes end up under car wheels on the local roads.
Smooth SnakeThe Smooth Snake (Coronella austriaca) is one of the six snake species that live in the area.
It is a small, non-poisonous, and harmless animal. However, this snake can be aggressive if it feels endangered and defends itself by biting. Before attacking, it takes an imminent position and looks powerful. It feeds on small invertebrates, but also small rodents. That is why many people consider it a useful animal.
